These bones are separatedfrom each other as follows : The two frontals by the frontalsuture, the frontal from the parietal by the coronal suture, thetwo parietal by the sagittal suture, and the two parietal fromthe occipital by the lambdoidal suture. At the junction ofthe lambdoidal and the sagittal sutures there is a membranousspace, called the posterior fontanel, triangular in shape. At thejunction of the frontal, coronal, and sagittal sutures there isalso a membranous space, called the anterior fontanel, kite-shaped, and larger than the posterior fontanel. This portionof the skull, the cranium, yields to pressure, and is reduced insize by an overlapping of the bones. The unyielding portion of tin- skull comprises tin- face andthe base of the skull. The bones of this region are fixed andunyielding. A transverse vertical section of the skull is somewhat wedge-shaped, the wedge tapering toward the neck. A longitudinalmedial section is distinctly conical in form. PLATE 7-
